Faculty Development and Training

Navigating unfamiliar routes can be challenging without the right support and guidance. The prospect of teaching online can be daunting, even for the most experienced instructors. We help your faculty develop the skills they need to lead engaging courses that define meaningful experiences for learners.

Instructor Success Means Learner Success

Teaching online and teaching in classrooms are two very different experiences. We realize this, so we  empower instructors to thrive through a combination of immersive training opportunities and on-demand resources.

We will support your faculty, so they feel comfortable using the learning management system (LMS) to its full potential, all while improving student outcomes through personalized engagement. Our faculty development solutions support your instructors in boosting their performance, while providing educational experiences geared towards strong outcomes for learners.

Empowering Online Instructors by Developing Skillsets

Our online faculty development courses follow proven best practices for creating versatile and powerful educational experiences. We will show instructors how to use an LMS effectively, giving them the techniques they need to make their version of classroom success a reality.

This includes:

  • Online teaching course for strategic learner support

We offer a four-week course to help instructors strategically support online learners. Our instructional design and media development teams collaborated with Dr Susan Ambrose, author of How Learning Works, to make this happen.

  • Engaging online course development

This self-paced course will give new faculty members the tools and techniques they need to create online learning experiences that both engage and inspire learners.

“A large part of our success has been from the relationships, the education, and the development that has come from the Wiley learning designers to our faculty. ”
- Christopher J. Ward, Winthrop University

Keeping Up Learner and Instructor Momentum

Continuous development and innovation are both necessary to help instructors keep up with advancing pedagogy, and to keep student engagement high.

To achieve this, we will give you access to:

  • Our Wiley Fellows

This is an empowering community of educators and experts, working together to shape the future of higher ed. When members of your team become Wiley Fellows, they collaborate, research, and work on projects that aim to remove learners’ obstacles to success. They also share learning-experience boosting techniques and technologies.

  • Our enhancement grants

Innovation in education is important to us. To keep things moving forward, we award enhancement grants to our partners’ faculty and administrators. These allow them to refine existing (or research new) techniques and technologies for enhancing their programs.

Since 2018, we have awarded grants valued at over $238,000.

  • Our Center for Teaching and Learning

We have an on-demand platform full of resources for enhancing course design and delivery. Instructors can explore our extensive collection of research, techniques, and best practices, all to help them boost the quality of their online classes.

How Do Universities Go Online?

There’s far more to going digital than a stable internet connection. We have created an infographic based on the study Online Learning at Public Universities: Recruiting, Orienting, and Supporting Online Faculty, which surveyed a number of colleges and universities. It breaks down how universities prepare instructors to lead online classrooms.
