Employee Spotlight: Koby Johnson

Employee Spotlight: Koby Johnson

At Wiley Education Services, we talk a lot about our people. Institutional partners frequently cite the expertise and collaborative nature of our people as a key benefit to working with us. So what does a Wiley employee look like and how do they contribute to the workplace culture? In this Employee Spotlight series, we sit down with Wiley colleagues across our four offices to learn more about who they are and what they do – both in and outside of the workplace.

Get to know Koby Johnson, Senior Director of Admissions.

Koby began at Wiley in 2010 and rose through the ranks to become the Senior Director of Admissions. In this role, he oversees the Chicago office’s entire student recruitment team for our university partners. Koby is responsible for ensuring that each student at Wiley’s partner schools receives a high-quality, consistent recruitment experience. His goal is to guarantee that all students feel that they are supported by someone who works directly at the institution, and that all university partners feel that they receive quality student applicants.

Koby is a natural born salesperson but it might surprise some to learn that when he enrolled in college, his path was not in sales, business, or anything related – rather, he started school at University of San Francisco as an Art History major. He hoped to become a docent at an art museum but after several semesters he decided to change course. He instead set his sights on travelling the world and enlisted in the United States Army. As a member of the armed forces, Koby completed airborne training and was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. He would eventually be deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia to support humanitarian efforts. After his deployment he was assigned to Bamburg, Germany and ultimately finished his army career honorably at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

When Koby completed his service with the Army, he moved to Chicago and enrolled in DePaul University to complete his degree in Commerce. Koby dabbled in staffing and recruiting for several years after completing his degree and eventually ended up at Wiley (then called Deltak), where he was awarded the Wachman Scholarship and earned his Masters of Business Administration from the University of Scranton.

Koby lives in Naperville, Illinois with his wife, Theresa, and little girl, Lucy. Theresa and Koby were married last July in Cancun, Mexico and have been enjoying the newlywed life. Koby also has a son from a previous marriage – Koby Jr. – who is currently active duty in the United States Navy as a submariner aboard the USS ILLINOIS out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Koby enjoys travelling and hopes to visit Italy in the near future. In addition to travelling, Koby likes to hit the gym, work on home improvement projects, and collect tools.
